A Bottled Affair-Wedding Day Wines On A Budget. Thinking outside of the box

At A Bottled Affair we work with a lot of brides and grooms – helping with everything from choosing the perfect wines to be served at the reception to developing a signature wedding day cocktail. But by far the most frequently asked question we hear from brides and grooms is how to serve good quality wines at the wedding reception without breaking the bank. For larger sized receptions, even wines priced at $12 to $15 per bottle can add up to a big expense. So where are the bargains when it comes to wedding day wines?

Sure you can find wines priced at $7 or $8 per bottle, but many of these inexpensive wines tend to be poorly made and not of great quality. (And that’s no bargain at any price.) Plus many of the less expensive wines offer widely recognizable labels, advertising to your guests know exactly how much (or little) you’ve spent on the wine. The only true bargains we’ve come across in quality wine doesn’t come in a bottle … it comes in a box! We work with several terrific values for boxed wine that average a cost of $8 per ‘bottle.’ How do they do it?  It simply comes down to economy of scale and the fact that boxed wine comes with lower packaging and shipping costs than traditional bottles. With that said, we’re not advocating serving wine from a box at your wedding.  Instead, think outside of the box! You can easily and inexpensively buy empty wine bottles to fill with good quality boxed wine. (Or, even better, recycle your own wine bottles!) If you’re going this route, craft and hand-made sites like etsy.com offer tons of ideas for customizing wine bottles, including low cost labels printed with details about your big day or even photos of the bride and groom. Boxed wine can also be elegantly served from rented carafes or made into delicious Sangria served from a pitcher or beverage dispenser, both of which will add a classic ‘Old World’ touch to your reception while driving down costs. Two of our favorite (Sommelier-approved) boxed wines are OYESS, Tempranillo, Spain ($32 for a 3L box or $8 per ‘bottle’) for red and Hughes Beaulieu, Picpoul de Pinet, Le Petite Frog ($36 for a 3L box or $9 per ‘bottle’) for white.
